It was my birthday... three weeks ago. I was going to publish this earlier, but I'm been struggling with what to say. All I know is my spring semester is coming to an end, and I'm swamped with papers, projects, and exams. It is crazy to think I've almost completed my first year in college. It certainly has been a rollercoaster of ups and downs. Although originally, I was going to be talking about turning 19, I felt a college guide might be more insightful.
How to get through your first year of college:
-Make friends with people in your hall. They are your neighbors for a reason. These people became the ones, I went out with, ate dinner with, and just hung around. When you are bored, you now have a hall filled with friends to choose from.
-There's a chance you'll end up with a roommate you don't necessarily get along with. I was lucky enough to have one who became a best friend; however, people do transfer and that's what she decided was the best option for her. Second semester I received a new suitemate and was extremely happy with the turnout. Although you may not get along with one of your roomies, it's not hard to be civil. Especially when it comes to the bathroom.
-No floor-cest, aka dating someone on your floor. I promise you it's not a good idea. You will see these people daily.
-Boys. I don't even know where to start with this one. In my experience, take advantage of ones who want to take you out on dates. (Who doesn't love free food?) Overall, what I've ultimately learned from this year is playing games get old. Be straightforward with what you want. If the guy isn't giving you the time of day, he's not worth it. I don't want to stereotype college boys; however, a lot of them want the same thing. If you are not into that, don't change yourself to be.
-Take advantage of the free activities your school offers. My residence offered free "workout" classes every day. Yoga was my favorite. Working out in a gym, is so confusing to me so I'd much rather take a class. Plus who doesn't love free stuff?
-Get involved. I cannot stress this enough. I have many regrets my freshmen year. Not from something I did wrong but something I didn't do at all because I was scared. College isn't about hiding in your bedroom once classes dismiss, even though watching Netflix in your loft bed is so comforting. You won't truly get what you are looking for out of college if you don't get involved. I'm currently in FAMD, The Fashion Association of Merchandising and Design. It was such a great decision for myself, now I have made friends with girls in my program as well as gone to fashion related events in Michigan.
-Although, I mentioned how getting involved is important, so is relaxing. So if you decide to binge watch a series on Netflix, I highly recommend Gossip Girl. Although Blair Waldorf makes college look like a fashion show, it isn't.
-Go to class. Once you skip, you'll be tempted to do it again. You never know when your teacher will surprise you with a quiz or extra credit. I know my grades suffered the more I would miss my class, so just go, you are paying for it.
-8 ams are a no go. Unless you are forced or just enjoy waking up at 7am, I don't advise taking an 8am class. Waking up every other day at that time was a struggle. Also when you are scheduling for classes make sure and give yourself time to get lunch. Going to class hungry is worse than going tired.
-You will run out of money. I didn't want to overwhelm myself; however, I think that was my excuse for not getting a job. However, if you don't get one, don't expect to buy those Doc Martin boots you were looking at. Unfortunately, the money you saved from summer just runs out, and you are forced to eat cafe food instead of the Qdoba you've been craving.
-Cafe food. (The grilled cheese day is always my favorite.) There will be days when nothing they serve sounds even relatively good. That's why cereal, microwaveable pizza, and easy mac will be your lifesaver.
-If going out isn't your thing; that's okay. However if you choose to drink, be safe about it. (Beer before liquor never sicker, liquor before beer in the clear.)
I think that is all the tips I have for now. If you have any other questions about college, comment below or send me an email. I'd be happy to help.
P.S Always put water in your Easy Mac. It sounds so simple, but I've been woken up at 4 in the morning because the microwave caught fire. Don't be that person.
